I teach using the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) syllabus, using both their classical and Jazz routes as desired by the student. I also teach the Rockschool syllabus for students who wish to learn a range of different popular music styles.
I teach these various syllabi in such a way that exams are milestones, rather than as a means to an end – exactly how the exam boards intend them. However, graded exams are not the only route to learning piano, and many people choose to learn outside of this structure. I have taught many students, both younger and adult learners, who have learnt for the enjoyment and satisfaction of developing their own playing skills.
As well as teaching notated pieces, I encourage students to make up their own melodies and to improvise, as this provides a strong foundation for confident playing and solid musicality – as well as keeping lessons fun!
We will hold regular informal group sessions where you can play in front of each other, or in duet. You can choose to play pieces you have been practising, or improvising and trying out new music. We will what you enjoy or what you are finding difficult so that you can learn together as a group.
Online resources
As part of your lessons you will be able to access resources from the online Bay Area, including
- exercises and studies written for you based around your own playing as your lessons develop
- post-lesson videos to support practice
- resources to support your piano-playing
You will also have the opportunity to take short videos of your practice in between lessons and upload them to the Bay Area where you will receive useful feedback to continue to develop in your practice.
Lesson information
I will recommend tutor books for lessons, although you are free to bring along your own if you wish. Parents of younger students are welcome to sit in on lessons.

*Any lessons between 7-9pm will need to take place at the pupil’s home.
